If you are looking for “the facts” on medical marijuana it may just depend on who you listen to. Even using the term medical marijuana will cause a stir in those who prefer it be called medical cannabis. I have decided to use both terms to try and keep everybody happy. Why not? We are, after all, talking about a drug known to create feelings of happiness.
Marijuana is used by millions as a recreational drug and is considered to be mild in its effects. Although it has been technically illegal since the 1930’s, Cannabis use has been pretty mainstream since the 1970’s and has now been legalized or decriminalized in several parts of the world.
Some regular users of Cannabis swear by its medicinal properties. There are testimonials and documentation that it can help relieve chronic pain, nausea and a lack of appetite associated with ailments such as cancer and HIV. There are also studies that have shown cannabis to aid in multiple sclerosis symptoms such as muscle stiffness and spasms. It may also cut down the number of seizures in those that suffer from epilepsy.
If you have ever smoked marijuana (and almost 50% of Americans say that they have), you will know that the effects such as mood changes and relaxation can happen almost immediately. The effects will take a little longer if you are using it in pill form or eating it in baked goods. The quickness of its effectiveness with regards to relaxation and relief is one of the benefits of using marijuana as a treatment for whatever ailments that you are suffering from.
Some of the negative effects of smoking cannabis include, lethargy and lack of short term concentration. Excessive and long term smokers may develop breathing problems and lung irritation. As with any drug, prescription or otherwise, do your homework. Studies are not conclusive in just how marijuana affects health from prolonged use. If you are pregnant or have existing medical conditions you should see a doctor before using it as a treatment.
Drugs Made From Marijuana
Dronabinol is a drug that is made with THC and is used for treating nausea and vomiting in those that are undergoing chemotherapy for cancer. It is also used by some patients suffering from AIDS to increase appetite and prevent excessive weight loss. It is available in Canada and the U.S. by prescription. Some of the most common side effects from taking Dronabinol include drowsiness and lightheadedness. Consultation with your doctor is essential to determine if this drug may be something that is beneficial to you. There are risks of more serious side effects that need to be taken into account before using it.
There are several other drugs that are being tested that include synthetic and actual cannabinoids found in the marijuana plant. The most researched and well known cannabinoid and the one that alters your mood is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Other cannabinoids such as cannabidiol (CBD) are now being researched as possible treatments for things such as inflammation,, anxiety and chronic pain. The fact that CBD doesn’t alter your mood like THC makes it a more appealing treatment option for some patients who are.seeking treatment for ailments without getting the buzz.
How Do You Get Medical Marijuana
Medical marijuana can be obtained in most states when it has been recommended by a physician for certain illnesses and chronic conditions. Laws differ drastically from country to country and state to state. In most places you will be required to carry an ID card and you will be put on a registry of approved patients. Be aware of exactly what you are allowed to do in each region. The amount of medical marijuana per patient in a given time period is not standard. Do some research and determine what you need to do to stay within the legal guidelines in your region. Caregivers for patients who qualify must also be aware of the legal guidelines for their participation in supplying for those that are in their care.
There seems to be an increasing confidence in the effectiveness of cannabis as a treatment alternative in some cases of chronic pain and illness. There is also evidence dating back centuries showing that cannabis was around and used as a form of medicine by the ancient Chinese, Greek and Roman cultures. Cannabis is a natural plant and if it can ease the suffering of those with discomfort due to illness then I say, why not make it even more mainstream?
